The Cuyahoga County prosecutor announced charges yesterday, saying the firefighters paid co-workers under the table to work their shifts for them.
Fire Chief Daryl McGinnis said today the department is reexamining this practice of shift-trading.
MCGINNIS: "We've already started to do some things with the trade policies in making sure that we can account for the trades, and who's off at what times, making sure people are not fatigued when they enter into a trade. We've already started to do that."
McGinnis says the department has set up a new scheduling office to ensure that the firefighters scheduled to work are actually at work. The City of Cleveland says the 13 firefighters are on leave and will also face an administrative hearing.
