Roads Open, Train Service Restored after False-Alarm Bomb Scare

The RTA found an abandoned duffel bag at the station just before 9 a.m. and called in the Cleveland police to investigate.

Portions of E. 55th street and nearby I-490 were shut down while the police bomb squad searched the station.

Lavelle Smith lives in Cleveland and was trying to take the Rapid westbound when he saw police.

He says he waited outside for nearly an hour before officers said all was clear.

SMITH: "When I came up here, I saw the bomb squad and two police squad cars in the middle of the street. And after that, I saw like eight to 10 transit police cruisers out here, with the dogs going around searching for bombs."

Shortly before noon, Cleveland police said the bomb squad found nothing threatening in the duffel bag -- only "personal items."

Cleveland police say they will beef up patrols in and around downtown during the Indians game tonight.
