State Sen. Nina Turner was a sharp critic of the way Secretary of State Jon Husted managed the 2012 election. Now, Turner is openly considering challenging Husted for his job next year.
In a speech during last night’s dinner, Turner said the secretary of state ought to safeguard voting rights. She accused Republicans of doing the opposite.
TURNER: “What we faced last year were long lines, appeals to suppress the vote, voter intimidation, wasted tax dollars. We will not stand for that in the state of Ohio.”
Turner wouldn’t say specifically when she’ll announce her decision on the race.
Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald says he’s merely in the exploratory phase of a possible campaign to unseat Gov. John Kasich. But a couple speakers last night referred to FitzGerald as the next governor of Ohio.
In a brief interview before his speech, FitzGerald said that at speaking trips across the state, he and Democrats have criticized Kasich for cutting funds for local governments in the last two-year budget.
FITZGERALD: “It’s caused them to cut their own services, lay off police officers, firefighters, also raise a lot of local taxes. That’s been very unpopular.”
FitzGerald says he’ll probably announce a decision on the governor’s race before the end of the month.
