The legislation sponsored by Ohio’s Rob Portman and West Virginia’s Joe Manchin would allow the U.S. Mint to produce a commemorative coin for the Hall of Fame’s 50th anniversary.
PORTMAN: "This commemorative coin costs the taxpayers nothing. The proceeds from it first go to pay the taxpayers back, and then it goes to the hall. This is something that has been done for other sports, as Sen. (Kirsten) Gillibrand did a 75th anniversary Pro Baseball Hall of Fame Coin last year. And it's now law."
Ohio has 23 Hall of Famers, and West Virginia has six. Thirteen Pro Football Hall of Famers sent a letter to Senators in December, saying they support the coin idea. The Hall plans to use the proceeds for its “Future 50” project, its largest expansion in its history.
