Police Department Improves Response To Missing Persons Reports

How police treat women who report sex crimes and investigate missing person reports came under harsh criticism following that discovery, and a special commission later made more than two dozen recommendations for improvements

16 of 26 recommendations have been completed so far, according to the commission's latest report. A database has been created so detectives are no longer using paper, and they've also been given email accounts. A missing persons hotline also is up and running, some training is underway, and progress is being made on creating space within police precincts that are more victim friendly.

Megan O'brien of the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, who is a member of the monitoring committee, says she's pleased with the progress. She says so far most is at the policy level, and the goal is for it to trickle down to officers on the front lines.
