Julie Treible of Lakewood, Ohio caught a common spring cold this year and lost her ability to speak — for six weeks. The cold had turned into bronchitis, then laryngitis — at least that's what she thought. What she actually had was "functional dyshonia" - a condition that causes the muscles that control the vocal cords to tighten and lock. WCPN Health reporter Gretchen Cuda filed this report for NPR on how a Cleveland Clinic doctor restored Treible's ability to speak within minutes through a careful throat massage.
