Glenn In Line For $2B In Projects

What's proposed for Glenn is a one-point-eight billion dollar exploration technology program, plus a space technology office and an increase in aeronautics research.

It's significant on several fronts, according to NASA Glenn Interim Director Ray Lugo.

RAY LUGO:
"Pretty much all the last few assignments we've had over the last couple of years, we have been a project-level element of a bigger program, so we haven't had the ability to control those dollars. This raises our profile within the agency, but more importantly is industry will be more interested in coming here to the Cleveland area to work with us."

Lugo refused specifics about how many jobs might result from increased work, but indicated the current mix of 34-hundred employees and independent contractors would remain relatively stable. And he is hopeful the increased status leads to more assignments.

The major hiccup is that President Obama faces asteroid-sized hurdles getting plans for Glenn and nine other NASA centers approved by Congress. Some legislators remain upset over his scrapping back-to-the-moon projects that would have enriched their districts, and may not want to approve Mr. Obama's adjustments.

The assigned provisions for NASA Glenn also provide for academic grants and fellowships for up to 500 students.
