Report Says Ohioans Rapidly Losing Insurance Coverage

According to the non-partisan health watchdog "Families USA Foundation" - more than 51-hundred Ohioans lose health insurance monthly - an estimated 62 thousand people this year.

Some drop coverage because of its expense, while others lose jobs that included health coverage.

Executive Director Ron Pollack says every day of delay reforming insurance law - costs people either good health, or their savings.

RON POLLACK: "Those who say we should delay, really are not being sensitive to the huge human cost that people will bear if health reform is delayed."

Ohio is one of several states currently investigating reform possibilities.

The latest plans being floated by the Ohio Department of Insurance include helping young adults, among the hardest hit by coverage loss, by increasing the age for them to remain insured under their parents policies.

State reform might also guarantee coverage for people with pre-existing poor health.
Pollock says both are strong steps, but many states can't - or won't - institute such changes.

His group is pushing the Obama administration to enact a federal program that would enforce similar rules.

RON POLLACK: "Make sure that people don't continue to lose coverage, and that we stop the insurance companies from denying coverage to people who need care the most."

The report on Losing Health Coverage is the first of three that Families USA plans to publish.
The others will focus on Gaining Coverage, and Coverage Affordability.
