Cleveland officials say the city has spent at least $1.5 million to clean up a Detroit Road brownfield site owned by the firm.
Demolition and environmental clean up began on the site in October of 2006, and officials say the reimbursement could help fund additional clean up at other brownfields throughout Cleveland.
Law Director Robert Triozzi says unlike many companies which abandon properties, Standex has not gone out of business, and could be forced by courts to pay for removal of the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) left behind. The US EPA has previously ordered Standex to take over the clean up efforts.
