The Mentor operation of Michigan-based Con-way Freight will be closed by the end of next week, as the trucking company cuts 40 locations nationwide, four of them in Ohio.
All 41 employees at the Mentor depot have been offered transfer options to centers in Cleveland and Erie, Pennsylvania. Spokesman Gary Frantz would not speculate how many workers are expected to accept the offers. He tells 90.3 the Mentor area will continue to receive daily freight service.
Con-way employs nearly 14-hundred Ohioans, and specializes in less-than-truckload shipping for small businesses. It says these cost cutting moves will save $30 to $40 million per year, mostly by reducing mileage 5 percent, saving 4.9 million gallons of diesel fuel.
The other Ohio facilities being shuttered are in Lancaster, Lima, and Mansfield, leaving 16 Ohio sites in operation.
