Joe the Plumber Steals the Show at Debate Party

Members of both parties - as well as independents - convened at downtown's Pickwick and Frolic comedy club to watch the last match-up between the candidates.

Although the group favored Barack Obama, that didn't deter Greater Cleveland Young Republicans President Joe Amschlinger from cheering John McCain. But he left disappointed that McCain didn't hit harder.

Amschlinger: "I really would have liked to see him hit him harder on some things - especially some of the economic plans."

Obama supporters - for the most part - were uncritical of their candidate’s performance.

The debate lacked a zinger moment - a la "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" but Obama supporter Carol Lindley says she'll always remember Joe the Plumber, a man Obama met while campaigning here in Ohio. He became the candidates' stand-in for all middle class Americans.

Lindley: "He was the character. He was the audience. He was America to those guys."

Towards the end of the debate - sound started going in and out and one TV lost its signal. A few frustrated people left, but most continued eating their French fries, drinking their beers and chatting with their neighbors.

That's what happens when you bring young people of any party together, says Cleveland resident and McCain supporter Candice Miller.

Miller: "We're a little semi-removed but still see where its gonna impact us in the future so I think we relax during it all to like, knock back a few beers."

Perhaps one of the few instances of real cross party camaraderie in Northeast Ohio, as the race enters its final stretch.
