When area leaders fought to save 1,000 jobs at the Defense Finance Accounting Service three years ago - the federal government eventually agreed to not only keep the center open, but to send other jobs here as DFAS centers around the country were shutterred.
That promise is being made good as those other DFAS office close their doors.
An additional 1000 DFAS jobs will be located in Cleveland by 2011.
At a Thursday news conference, Congressman Dennis Kucinich called it a victory for the city.
DENNIS KUCINICH:"It's also a lesson about what happens when we unite as a community; from the business community and the political community, cause we knew what was at stake, that if we lost 1,000 jobs, that's a $40M payroll at least."
Standing alongside Kucinich and Congressman Steve laTourette, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said the DFAS jobs are high salary positions with benefits that will add 24 million dollars in taxable payroll for Cleveland.
