General Motors' announcement that it would speed up cost cutting measures will have no effect on the Lordstown plant in Northeast Ohio, according to a company spokesman. Tom Mock says the compact Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G-5, both manufactured in Lordstown, are selling well, and plans to add a third shift in August will go forward. The picture is much bleaker in southern Ohio, where truck and SUV production had been slated to shut down in 2010. That timeline may be moved up. GM says production at its engine manufacturing plant in the Cleveland suburb of Parma may also be affected by this latest cost-cutting plan, but would not elaborate.
