When Congress passed legislation back in 1990 to protect Americans with disabilities from discrimination in the workplace lawmakers thought they had resolved a long-standing civil rights issue. But in the intervening years, the courts have whittled away at who is covered by the law and that has left millions of people with disabilities unprotected. Now Congress is well on its way toward remedying that. Ohio Democratic Congresswoman Betty Sutton of the 13th District successfully steered a revised Americans with Disabilities Act through debate on the House floor. Sutton says the bill restores Congress's original intent. She talked with Ideastream's Eric Wellman about the need for a change.
