Foreclosure Moratorium Considered by City Council

Council will consider a resolution this evening that would call on Cuyahoga County common pleas judges to stop foreclosures of occupied homes for long enough to allow borrowers and lenders to try to reach an agreement through mediation.

Councilman Jay Westbrook of Ward 18 drafted the resolution and says it makes sense for everyone involved.

WESTBROOK: This crisis is at such a pitched level, that we realize that keeping people in homes, emphasizing workouts, actually helps the lender as well as the lendee and certainly stabilizes the community.

Westbrook says he’s hopeful the resolution will pass tonight. The measure is co-sponsored by council president Martin Sweeney and Majority Leader Sabra Pierce Scott, and has the support of a number of community organizations.
