Cleveland Schools Debut Safety Measures

Fade in beeping...

That's the sound of an incursion into what Safety Chief Lester Fultz calls a "bubble of safety," that officials hope will keep students safe from drugs, gangs, weapons and violence.

Metal detectors like this one, demonstrated at AB Hart School, will be installed at all district schools by August. Fultz says searches with drug sniffing dogs will begin this month.

Fultz: "The goal is really not to arrest people. It's to keep the drugs out. To let them know, if you use drugs, that's on you, but not in my buildings."

The $9 million upgrade was sparked by a shooting at Success Tech last October in which a student gunman wounded four people then killed himself.

District CEO Eugene Sanders says there will also be more mental health and medical personnel in the schools.

Sanders: "We realize that metal detectors and wands are not the total solution."

A report on the complete security plan is due June 1.
