Cuyahoga County Elections Board to Test Voting System

Jane Platten made what amounted to a confession in her state of the Elections board report at the city club.

Platten: "Does Cuyahoga's voting system have the capacity, to withstand the volume and workload demands that the dynamics of Cuyahoga County presents? Is the system appropriately secure? This is what keeps me up at night."

Trouble with the memory cards and paper readouts on the county's electronic voting machines during the May 2006 primaries caused long lines, and delayed the tallying of votes. Platten said weekly meetings with the manufacturer Premier, formerly Diebold, have made her more comfortable. But, she says, there is still a lot that could go wrong in the event of a countywide recount.

The county has 96 percent of the poll workers, and will test having a trouble table at voting locations.

The county's 1.3 million voters will be taken care of on election day by about 8,000 employees -- who will each work approximately 21 hours.
