Electronic Voting Machines Will Be Deployed in November Elections

Nearly all of the board's 6,000 voting machines will be in action in November but a few hundred will remain in reserve in case of high turnout or equipment failure.

Like last year, the county is hiring about 1,200 technicians to trouble shoot at its nearly 600 voting locations. But Elections Director Jane Platten says the techs will take on double duty this year as voter "precinct guides."

Jane Platten: And they're going to serve as information resources at the front door in case someone walks through the door and says 'I'm not sure I'm in the right polling location' or 'I'm not sure I'm registered to vote.'

Long lines, confusion and problems with the county's voting machines last November caused a federal judge to order 16 polling stations to stay open beyond the scheduled closing time. That led to the county being put on administrative oversight by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.

Brunner says the new board is making progress. She instigated the resignation of the previous board.

Jennifer Brunner: One important bench mark will be how they do at the November general election this year. They've been fortunate that they've been able to ease into the election process, starting with the may primary and with the series of primary elections this fall. When we now add in the City of Cleveland proper, I think that will be a good test.

On a related front, Ohioans can now vote absentee for any reason but the ballots must be in by October 31st. Applications can be downloaded from the county's web site. Kymberli Hagelberg, 90.3.
