Akron Marks Sixth Anniversary of 9/11

The wail of a lone bagpiper filled the air inside St. Bernard's ornate sanctuary to signal the beginning of the city's gather to honor those killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Dubbed Rhythms of Remembrance and Renewal, the hour long event showcased local musicians, dancers and singers, as well as a group of Muslim, Christian and Jewish Children from local schools who came together as a choir.

St. Bernard's Pastor, Father Paul Schlinder told the audience that the event was also a time to honor those serving in the military and to pray for peace.

Eric Carvill and Jessica Schroeder performed a liturgial dance in which the young woman was carried across the stage as a firefighter or soldier might carry the wounded. The pair moved across the front of the church as the Baroque angels seem to look down from the gilded ceiling of the historic place of worship.

Mayor Don Plusquellic said each person should use their memory of the event to remember our strengths.

Muslim, Christian and Jewish Children from local schools sang as individual grops and came together as a single choir.

Among the most moving moments waqs a liturgical dance. Performed by Eric Carvill and Jessica Schroeder, it depicted a young woman carried across the pulpit as a firefighter or soldier might carry the wounded.
