In the midst of the 4-month strike, Goodyear Tire worker Frank Steen gave up his union membership. He had a family to support and couldn't afford to walk off the job. But, he says the union fined him $620 anyway. Now, he and the National Labor Relations Board are fighting to reverse that decision.
The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation is Steen's legal aid. Spokesman John Powell calls the union's actions unlawful.
John Powell: Right to work law protects an employee from whether or not they want to financially support a union. So what this means is Mr. Steen here is a victim of compulsory unionism.
Powell says Steen received nearly a dozen letters of hate mail and telephone calls threatening fines from union officials. Two other workers have also joined in the complaint. The case will be heard in front of an administrative law judge this August.
