It's been eight years since the City of Cleveland had any program to buy guns from it's residents. Critics of such programs say the types of guns bought back are generally older and not the ones typically used in violent crimes. But Councilman Zack Reed says he's hoping the program zeros in on guns that are neglected or forgotten about before they are stolen. He says buying guns back can make neighborhoods safer and also more attractive for local businesses.
Zack Reed: We gotta keep sending a clear message that it's safe to come do business in the City of Cleveland and it's safe to business in Mount Pleasant.
Reed says his legislation is currently limited to his Mount Pleasant ward, but he hopes other council members will be interested in expanding the program to their wards as well. Instead of money, gift certificates from local grocery chains would be offered in exchange for the guns. Lisa Ann Pinkerton, 90.3.
