Schreckengost Receives National Medal of the Arts

It's been a heady year for Viktor Schreckengost. The internationally famous Cleveland designer turned 100 this past summer. In celebration of this momentous birthday, 100 museums and galleries across the country put on displays of his work. Over the course of a prolific career, Schreckengost has designed art and consumer products that have been a part of many households, everything from dinnerware, to lawn chairs, to bicycles.

Susan Begley is Design Specialist for the National Endowment for the Arts and she says the National Medal juror have high standards.

Susan Begley: They look not only for artistic achievement, but also for teaching - passing the knowledge on to the next generation. And Viktor Schreckengost has done that.

Schreckengost will be one of 10 recipients of the National Medal of the Arts today in an Oval Office ceremony. David C. Barnett, 90.3.
