The big disappointment of the night was North Olmsted, which failed to pass its 6.5 mill levy. The district hasn't passed a levy since 2002, and now will look at cutting 30-50 teaching and other staff positions, as well as eliminating extra curricular activities and all sports to avoid operating in the red. Fairview Park was looking at the same scenario, but the levy there passed by just over 400 votes. Superintendent Brian Dietsch says he's relieved because those extra activities are valuable to the learning process.
Brian Dietsch: There's a lot of lessons to be learned - a lot of leadership lessons to be learned by being involved in sports or drama or a club.
Akron and Hudson City in Summit County can also avoid cuts with the passage of levies in those districts.
The attempt to fund schools through income tax instead of property taxes in Cloverleaf, Medina County passed. But in Stow-Monroe Falls, Summit County and Berkshire in Portage County, school income tax levies failed. Lisa Ann Pinkerton, 90.3.
