Out of the 74 positions eliminated, only around 60 were actually filled. The majority of the layoffs include food service positions that were eliminated from schools this summer that had dropped in enrollment or closed down. Those cuts alone save district half a million dollars. Other administrative cuts in testing assessment, finance, legal, human resources, and curriculum bring the total to $3.7 million. The final two million in savings will come from the district's capital improvement budget by eliminating the need for an outside construction consultant.
CEO Eugene Sanders says these streamlining measures are important not only for the health of the district, but for the message it sends.
Eugene Sanders: I hope that it sends a message that the administration and the board is focused on outcomes and we can to make sure that we're spending the people's money in a way that gets them the outcomes they're looking for.
Sanders says he expects more staff cuts in the near future. Lisa Ann Pinkerton, 90.3.
