Preventing Invasive Species in Great Lakes

Scientists say invasive species are wreaking havoc with Great Lakes ecosystems. They estimate new non-native species like zebra mussels are entering the lakes through the ballast water of foreign ships at the rate of one every eight months. At this week's conference speakers from academia, industry and government will address new technologies in ballast water treatment and management. The conference could help point the way to the best choice for new regulation of ballast water. Last week, a federal court in California ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to begin regulating ballast water discharges from freighters, including those in the Great Lakes.
