HD Explained

So what is HD2? Many radio stations, including WCLV, broadcast in digital in addition to their regular analog signal. This radio equivalent of television HD allows a station also to broadcast two or three more program streams. WCPN is now broadcasting in HD. The HD 1 channel is a digital version of their analog programming. WCPN's HD2 stream is WCLV's regular 24 hour schedule of classical music.

What does this mean for the WCLV audience? Because WCPN's coverage in Lake and Geauga Counties is much better than WCLV's since the move to 104.9 from a transmitter on the east side of the market. Listeners whose reception of 104.9 is marginal, if not missing entirely, can now enjoy WCLV via our sister station, 90.3 WCPN, 24 hours a day. HD Radios are generally available at a number of sites online. You may well need a rabbit ear television antenna, depending on your location. For your car, there are several new models that come equipped with HD radios. And there are a number of after-market car HD radios available at various Internet sites.

Robert Conrad shares his experience of listening to 90.3HD2: I purchased my car HD radio through the Crutchfield catalog. Recently, I drove throughout Lake and Geauga Counties in areas where WCLV's signal is weak or not there at all with clear HD reception to past Painesville on I-90 and out I-422 to Welshfield and then south to Hiram. On another weekend, I drove to Hudson, Kent, Stow and south on Route 8 to Cuyahoga Falls. Reception was very good, except for the area in Kent around the campus where it was spotty. The signal cut out on Route 8 on the northern edge of Cuyahoga Falls. One thing to remember about FM and HD, reception is always better in the car than in a residence. The car has an outdoor antenna, while many home radios either do not have any antenna, or a poor one. TV rabbit ear antennas work best.
