Program Guide 09-17-2016

Almanac

September 17

1179 death of Hildegard von Bingen – German writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, Benedictine abbess, visionary, and polymath (age c. 81); one of her works as a composer, the Ordo Virtutum, is an early example of liturgical drama and arguably the oldest surviving morality play.

1795 Saverio Mercadante baptized – Italian composer (d.1870); did not earn the fame of Donizetti or Rossini, but he composed as impressive a number of works as either; and he contributed significantly to the foundations upon which Giuseppe Verdi built his dramatic technique.

1862 Henry Holden Huss – American composer, pianist and music teacher (d.1953); his 1886 Piano Trio Op 23 'Munich' was dedicated to his teacher Josef Rheinberger and premiered with considerable acclaim, but the work was not published until 2008.

1878 Vincenzo Tommasini – Italian composer (d.1950); his biggest success was a 1916 arrangement of keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti for the Sergei Diaghilev ballet The Good-Humored Ladies (Le donne di buon umore); he and Arturo Toscanini completed Arrigo Boito's unfinished opera Nerone.

1884 Charles Tomlinson Griffes – American composer (d.1920); the most famous American representative of musical Impressionism; the amount and  quality of his music is impressive considering his short life and his full-time teaching job at the Hackley School for boys in Tarrytown, New York.

1892 Hendrik Andriessen – Dutch composer and organist (d.1981); brother of pianist and composer Willem Andriessen and the father of the composers Jurriaan Andriessen and Louis Andriessen and of the flutist Heleen Andriessen.

1931 first performance of the Delius tone poem A Song of Summer, conducted by Sir Henry Wood in London; the composer said "I want you to imagine we are sitting on the cliffs of heather and looking out over the sea. The sustained chords in the high strings suggest the clear sky and stillness and calm of the scene...The flutes suggest a seagull gliding by."

1958 Manfred Honeck – Austrian conductor (60 years old); since 2008, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony; one of his brothers is the Vienna Philharmonic concertmaster Rainer Honeck.

18-year-old guitarist Jason Lewis from Glencoe, Illinois, performs the third movement, La Toccata de Pasquini, from Sonata by Leo Brouwer (b. 1939)

11-year-old cellist Dylan Wu from New York, New York, performs Tarantella, Op. 33, by David Popper (1843–1913), with pianist Christopher O’Riley
