1786 Jean-Louis Tulou – French flute teacher, player, instrument maker and composer (d.1865); published methods for flute and piccolo.

1825 Karl Doppler – Austrian flute virtuoso, conductor, music director and composer (d.1910); younger brother of composer Franz Doppler and father of composer Árpád Doppler.

1910 premiere of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 'Symphony of a Thousand' in Munich with the composer conducting; a critical and popular success, and the last of Mahler's works that was premiered in his lifetime.

1937 first performance of Darius Milhaud's Suite Provençale in Venice, conducted by the composer.

1944 Vladimir Spivakov – Russian conductor, violinist (74 years old); helped found the Moscow Virtuosi in 1979

1945 John Mauceri – American conductor, producer and arranger for theater, opera and television (73 years old); founding director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in Los Angeles.

1954 premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Serenade after Plato's 'Symposium' at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, with composer conducting and Isaac Stern as violin soloist.

1956 Jeffrey Kahane – American pianist and conductor (62 years old); music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.

1957 Hans Zimmer – German film composer and music producer (61 years old); has composed music for more than 100 films, including award-winning film scores for The Lion King (1994), Crimson Tide (1995), The Thin Red Line (1998), Gladiator (2000), The Last Samurai (2003), The Dark Knight (2008), and Inception (2010).
