1803 Adolphe Adam – French composer and teacher (d.1856); best known today for his ballets Giselle (1841) and Le corsaire (1856, his last work), his opera Si j'étais roi (If I Were King, 1852) and his Christmas carol Minuit, chrétiens! (1844), set to English lyrics as O Holy Night (1847); among his students were Delibes and other influential composers.

1818 Félix Godefroid – Belgian harpist and composer (d.1897); called the “Paganini of the harp.”

1880 Ernest Bloch – Swiss-born American composer and teacher (d.1959); first Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music, 1920-1925; held several teaching appointments in the US, with George Antheil, Quincy Porter, Bernard Rogers, and Roger Sessions among his pupils.

1904 Leo Arnaud – French-born American composer and arranger (d.1991); best known for Bugler's Dream, one-time theme music for American coverage of the Olympics and considered a symbol of the Games; begins with a timpani cadence that is soon joined by a stately theme in brass.

1922 Leo Kraft – American composer, author and educator (d.2014).

1947 Peter Serkin – American pianist and teacher (71 years old); son of pianist Rudolf Serkin; barely a teenager when he debuted with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra; has premiered or been the dedicatee of many new works by such composers as Takemitsu, Lieberson, Knussen, Wuorinen and Elliott Carter, but has recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations four times; among his students are Simone Dinnerstein and Cecile Licad.
