Almanac

May 12

1739 Jan Vanhal – Bohemian-born composer (d.1813); in or around 1784; Haydn, Dittersdorf, Mozart and Vanhal played string quartets together and the image of four of the great composers of the time all joined in common music-making is an enduring image of the Classical era.

1750 according to Composers Datebook, the first documented report of an audience standing during the Hallelujah Chorus during Handel's Messiah occurred on this date; the great choral conductor, Robert Shaw, former Cleveland Orchestra Director of Choruses, hated the tradition.

1754 Franz Anton Hoffmeister – German composer (d.1812); his reputation today is mainly as a music publisher: by 1785 he had established one of Vienna’s first music publishers; he printed his own works plus those of many important composers of the time, including Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

1755 Giovanni Battista Viotti – Italian violinist and composer (d.1824); also a director of French and Italian opera companies in Paris and London.

1832 premiere of Gaetano Donizetti's comic opera L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) at the Teatro della Canobbiana, Milan; no. 12 on the Operabase list of the most-performed operas worldwide.

1842 Jules Massenet – French composer (d.1912); most of his operas fall in and out of fashion except for Manon (1884) and Werther (1892).

1845 Gabriel Fauré – French composer, organist, pianist and teacher (d.1924); one of the foremost French composers of his generation; his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers.

1903 Sir Lennox Berkeley – English composer (d.1989); studied with Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Ravel and much of his music reflects a French influence.

1926 first performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 in Saint Petersburg by what was known at the time as the Leningrad Philharmonic under Nikolai Malko; a tremendous success at its premiere, and still considered one of his finest works.

1941 Anthony Newman – American musician (75 years old); he's an organist, harpsichordist, pedal harpsichordist, pianist, fortepianist, conductor, writer, and teacher.
