1811 Ferdinand Hiller – German composer, conductor, pianist and writer (d.1885); his vast musical output--containing works in virtually every genre, vocal, choral, chamber and orchestral--is now forgotten; best remembered as the dedicatee of Schumann’s Piano Concerto and of Chopin's Nocturnes Op 15.

1882 Emmerich Kálmán – Hungarian-born operetta composer (d.1953); the popularity of his humorous cabaret songs led him toward the composition of operettas, his first great success being Tatárjárás (1908), known in German as Ein Herbstmanöver [‘Autumn maneuver’, although the English title is The Gay Hussars]; despite his Jewish origins he was one of Hitler's favorite composers; after rejecting the German chancellor’s offer to become an 'honorary Aryan', Kálmán moved first to Paris, then to the United States, settling in California in 1940.

1919 first concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Walter Rothwell, conductor;  the ‘LA Phil’ has a regular season of concerts at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and a summer season at the Hollywood Bowl; Gustavo Dudamel is the current Music Director, and Esa-Pekka Salonen is Conductor Laureate.

1925 Luciano Berio – Italian avant-garde composer (d.2003); noted not only for his experimental work (in particular his 1968 composition Sinfonia and his series of virtuosic solo pieces titled Sequenza) but also for his pioneering work in electronic music.

1929 George Crumb – American avant-garde composer (89 years old); famous as an explorer of unusual timbres, alternative forms of notation, and extended instrumental and vocal techniques.

1930 first performance of Albert Roussel's Symphony No. 3, by the Boston Symphony; one of several works commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky for the BSO's 50th Anniversary; others were Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Howard Hanson’s Romantic Symphony and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 4.

1931 Sofia Gubaidulina – Russian composer (87 years old); her music is characterized by the use of unusual instrumental combinations and decidedly spiritual approach to composition.

1931 first performance of Robert Russell Bennett’s Abraham Lincoln: a Likeness in Symphony Form by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski conducting.

1955 Cheryl Studer – American soprano (63 years old); has performed more than 80 roles ranging from the dramatic repertoire to roles more commonly associated with lyric sopranos and even coloraturas.
