State Auditor Conducts Surprise Attendance Count at Charter Schools

Auditor Dave Yost has said he wants to keep tabs on charter schools and their reported attendance, since those schools get state funding based on the number of students they have enrolled and attending classes.

On one day in 2014, he ordered staffers to show up at charter schools for surprise visits to take attendance. Yost said then that those pop-ins found nearly half the schools had the number of students they told the state they did.

Ohio Working To Keep Charter School Grant After School Grades Omitted

The Ohio Department of Education is working to keep a $71 million federal grant for charter schools. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports the agency is saying Ohio has a lot more failing charter schools than it initially claimed.  

The state is telling the feds Ohio has 57 failing charter schools, not six as it claimed in its grant application, and 59 high performing charters, not 93.
