Michael Drake, the chancellor at the University of California, Irvine, is expected to be hired as the new president of The Ohio State University later today, the Columbus Dispatch reports.

Drake will be OSU’s first black president and take the helm from interim leader Joseph Alutto. Alutto has been keeping the seat warm since Gordon Gee retired last July following a series of verbal gaffs.

Medically trained in ophthalmology and a champion of workplace diversity, Drake is credited with helping to right the reputation of U.C. Irvine’s Medical Center.

And as our partners at WOSU reports, Drake’s medical expertise will be a benefit for Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center.

Under Drake’s nearly eight years of leadership, UC Irvine added a new law school and appointed a controversial liberal legal scholar as its leader. The campus also expanded its department of education to a full school of education and added new programs in public health and nursing science.

Prior to his role at Irvine, Drake was the vice president of health affairs for the University of California system.
