The idea behind the Common Core might seem simple: A new set of nationwide standards for what students should know and be able to do in English and math.

The reality is complicated: Teachers must develop new curriculum and lessons. Parents must grapple with changes in their children's classes and homework. And policymakers face debates over whether the Common Core is even a good idea.

But there's help!

[related_content align="right"]Join WVIZ/PBS ideastream Education on Monday, Oct. 14 from 9-10:30 a.m. for An Uncommon View of the Common Core, a panel discussion of what you might not know--but need to know--about the Common Core. (Pre-event mingling starts at 8:30 a.m.)

I'll be moderating a panel discussion featuring:

  • Ohio Education Association President Becky Higgins;
  • Ohio Federation of Teachers President Melissa Cropper;
  • State Rep. Andy Thompson, sponsor of a bill to halt Common Core implementation in Ohio;
  • Ohio Schools Council Director Bill Zelei, a former Ohio Department of Education associate superintendent; and
  • Kirtland Local Schools Superintendent Steve Barrett.

Register today by contacting Greg Wasil at greg.wasil@ideastream.org or (216) 916-6370.

If you can't attend in person, you can follow along online. StateImpact Ohio reporter Amy Hansen will live-tweet the event starting at 9 a.m. at #ccssoh, as in Common Core Standards Ohio.
