A disability rights group now says Ohio children may be hurt if the Department of Education fails to stop the use of seclusion in schools. In a letter to the acting head of the Ohio Department of Education, Michael Sawyers, Disability Rights Ohio writes, "we are concerned that unless appropriate action is taken, students with disabilities will continue to be subjected to traumatic, potentially lethal practices."

In September, DRO published the results of an investigation into the use of seclusion rooms in the Columbus school district. The group found that school staff used seclusion rooms in some instances to punish children with special needs.

The group asked Columbus schools to make changes to the ways the rooms are used. Here's the school district's response.

DRO also asked ODE to ban the use of seclusion rooms entirely. ODE currently has no plans to do so, but is working on a draft policy that would prohibit the use of seclusion rooms as a form of punishment.

DRO says that's not enough.
