Teachers Show up in Funny Places in Ohio SB 5 Arguments

Yesterday, the Ohio Ballot Board approved "official arguments" for and against Issue 2. Issue 2 is the referendum on Senate Bill 5, which would limit collective bargaining for public employees.

Official arguments are the explanations of the pros and cons of the issue that the state publishes for voters. In the coming months, you'll see these lists of reasons to repeal and keep SB 5 in ads in newspapers and, eventually, outside polling locations. They'll also be available online, at the Ohio Ballot Board's website. They will not, however, appear on the ballot itself. (To see what SB 5, a.k.a., Issue 2 will look like on the ballot, click here.)

Interestingly, teachers appear at the top of the official argument FOR Issue 2 (which means FOR SB 5), but don't show up until the second half of the one-page argument AGAINST Issue 2 (meaning AGAINST SB 5). See the full arguments after the jump.

This set of official arguments comes with a twist. The ballot board, which is chaired by Secretary of State Jon Husted, approved the arguments, but for the first time included a disclaimer that none of the claims in the arguments have been checked or endorsed by elections officials. State Senator and ballot board member Keith Faber called for the disclaimer to "eliminate the possibility of anybody being confused that somehow we have validated the claims” Faber said.

The board is working on the exact wording of that disclaimer and should have it ready in the next few days, spokesman Matt McClellan said. The full arguments, not including the disclaimer text, are below.
