When you put a milk jug or a pop can on the curb for recycling, it's just the start of a journey. It's what happens next that's really interesting. On the next sound of ideas, we'll follow the milk jug all the way through the recycling process and let you judge for yourself: Is it worth the effort? The market for recycled materials is strong --you might actually be wearing the water bottle you drank from--and our will to recycle is growing stronger, too, even without the threat of fines. All about recycling in Northeast Ohio, Tuesday at 9 on 90.3.

The grocery stores in Michigan have vending machines that you put your recyclables into to get money out of. I used to drive around with my sister in the country side and she would be saying “there’s a nickle, there’s a dime” I said Carole, how can you see that money on the road--she said she was looking for bottles and cans. She and her kids would not only recycle they cleaned up the road side doing so.
Like the one caller, I too would like to know how do you get people to recycle? I live in Cleveland Hts and I recycle all recyclables, but I have noticed as home owners are placed by renters, there is less recycling!
Has the successful has RECYCLE BANK program been considered in Cuyahoga County and if not why not?
I get so irritated in the spring when we get hundreds of those non-recycleable black potting cups from the nurseries. They are such a nuisance because they take up so much volume in the rubbish. I wish pressure would be put on the nurseries to only use recycleable flats and pots.
Does Cleveland’s new recycle program include fines for business or office/commercial building owners or only residents?
I’ve personally seen the garbage collectors at my house (Shaker Hts.) and at Case Western throw the recycling in with the trash. I did call and complain and fortunately I haven’t seen it again recently, but it does happen and it isn’t an urban myth.
Plus, unfortunately, there are still big institutions (such as University Hospitals) that STILL do not offer recycling.
