Humankind: Voting Rights

SEGMENT 1: Although central to our democracy, the American right to vote has evolved only gradually, as freed slaves, women and civil rights activists slowly won the franchise. Includes the dramatic tale of a 1964 Freedom Summer volunteer.

SEGMENT 2: The struggle over voting rights continues to this day, with disagreements over the Voting Rights Act, partially struck down by the Supreme Court, voter ID laws and the question of allowing felons to vote.
