European Jazz Stage: Europe Goes Tropical

A blend of styles from Latin America made this program steam and swing. Hermeto Pascoal, founding father of Brazilian free jazz, happily mixed traditional rhythms like forros, frevos and sambas with jazz, rock and even modern classical music. Yamandú Costa is the biggest guitar talent Brazil has known for a long time. His playing tickles the senses and takes us to the corners of Brazilian music. Singer Izaline Calister and piano player Randal Corsen are from the island of Curaçao. They blended melodies of the Antilles with rhythms from the West Indies like the tumba. Bye-Ya played Cuban and Latin American rhythms mixed with jazz. Daniel Frankl hosted.
