United Nations Climate Summit

Leaders and diplomats from over 100 countries met in New York to address climate change. President Obama spoke Tuesday in front of leaders from all over the world at the United Nations assembly. The issue on the table - climate change and protecting our planet.

Climate change refers to the major changes in temperature, precipitation or wind patterns among other things over a long period of time.

Using extreme weather examples such as the droughts and wildfires in the west and recent hurricanes on the east coast, President Obama unveiled a series of steps the U.S. will take along with the international community to reduce pollutions by the year 2020. The U.S. and China account for nearly 45 percent of these pollutions, but both countries have come forward with plans to cut this number in the next few years. The meeting between the heads of state was the largest ever gathering on climate issues, beginning the groundwork for new national policies across the globe.
