Social Security Works! Why Expansion Will Make It Even Better

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the enactment of Social Security. Some argue that Social Security is unaffordable and therefore its benefits should be cut. Others argue that the issue is not one of affordability but of values. The latter group argues that expanding Social Security’s modest benefits is a solution to a number of challenges facing the nation, including a looming retirement income crisis and rising income inequality.
