52 Weeks Calendar; Near West Theatre; Heinen’s Grand Opening

When AGC - Academy Graphic Communication - first began printing a calendar 13 years ago, they saw it as a way to promote the business. Since then, it’s become much more than that - it has become a way to celebrate visual artists in Northeast Ohio.

In 1978, a fresh-faced manager is hired to organize a theater arts program for an urban community school and housing project on the near west side of Cleveland. The conditions are less than ideal, with the theater space on the third floor of a church that has no air conditioning and no elevator. It may sound like a plot for a play, but it’s actually the history of Cleveland’s Near West Theatre. Now, after 37 years, Act Two for this community theater is about to begin. Near West is near completion of a state-of-the-art facility in the Gordon Square Arts District at West 67th and Detroit Avenue, and looking forward to the April premiere of "Shrek the Musical."

If you happen to work or live in Downtown Cleveland, grocery shopping just got a whole lot easier. On February 25th, Heinen’s opened their 18th store in Northeast Ohio at the former Ameritrust Bank Building at East Ninth and Euclid Avenue. In addition to groceries you can also sample wines, beers, enjoy a coffee bar and buy prepared foods.

With nominations for the 2015 Cleveland Arts Prize ending this month, throughout February we've been showcasing short films by local filmmaker Ted Sikora about previous Cleveland Arts Prize winners. In our final installment we bring you the story of Percussionist Jamey Haddad, the 2010 Mid-Career Winner.
