The American Graduate Storytelling Contest was designed for students at-risk for dropping out of high school due to a personal challenge to share their success stories, specifically about a Champion who helped them overcome their odds.
WVIZ/PBS ideastream Education, in partnership with Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Get 2 School Attendance Campaign, sought entries from 9th through 12th grade. Over 160 students from 18 CMSD high schools entered the contest.
ideastream received written narratives, video and audio recordings, poetry, sculptures, paintings and sketches. The entries illustrated the students’ will to succeed and how they overcame social, academic, physical and emotional challenges to stay in school. Every entry highlighted the role that a caring and consistent adult can play in the lives of young people.
From the pool of entries received, ideastream staff and community partners scored and selected the top 30 semi-finalists and top 10 finalists. The top 5 scored entries received Grand Prizes as well as an opportunity to be featured during the Celebration of Champions event on January 20th.
All of the top 30 entries are available for viewing. The entries are listed by challenge category.
Please note: In narratives, audio or video, that mention abuse or other criminal activity, real or perceived, ideastream has redacted names and any references to relevant relationships.
