Available Lesson Plans
- NewsDepth Visits Adams County Ohio history, U.S. history, language arts. Classroom lessons and activities for grades 4 and 4-6. The first series of activities focuses on the lives of the first people to live in North America, specifically Ohio. It includes information and an activity about the Great Serpent Mound. In the second lesson, students will read about the history of mounds in the United States and Ohio in particular. They will fill out a work sheet, study vocabulary and do map work.
- Space Shuttle Discovery Makes Last Flight to New Home at Smithsonian Science. Classroom activities for lower elementary, grades 4-5 and grades 6-8. Students learn about the history of the space program, how the shuttle is built and how astronauts train for space; students draw a space shuttle; students discover the importance of space exploration.
- Midwest Pounded by Tornadoes and Wild Weather Science, earth science and geography. Classroom lessons and activities for grades 3, 1-3, 4-6 and grade 8. Students learn about how tornadoes are formed, the classification of tornadoes, label maps, create tornado tubes and compose a safety brochure, and collect data and predict where tornadoes will occur in tornado alley.
- Fourth Grade Friends are Published Authors Language Arts. Classroom lessons and activities for grades three to eight. Students plan, write, illustrate, and publish their own children’s picture books; students will be able to identify nonfiction how-to books, discuss the ways how-to books are used, apply their knowledge and create a how-to book of their own; students will explore the relationship between the form of books and the content inside; and more.
- One Hundred Year Anniversary of the Titanic History, Language Arts, Science, Math, Cross-curricular (History, Art, Physical Education, Music). Classroom Lessons, Internet Resources, Whiteboard Activities, Printouts for grades three to eight. Lessons include interactively exploring the Titanic, understanding procedures on a ship like the Titanic, using the passenger list to solve math problems.
- Cleveland Browns Light It Up Blue for Autism Language arts, visual arts, health, science. Classroom lessons, activities and videos for grades three to eight about autism.
- Henryville School Bus Driver Saves Kids from Tornado Language arts, reading, social studies. Classroom lessons and activities for grades 3 to 7. Examples: Students list qualities of a hero. They identify historic figures who have exemplified good citizenship. Students define "What is a hero?" to determine "Who is a hero?" Students will be able to name the qualities of heroes and identify heroes on their own lives, and determine ways to help and make a difference in their school or community.
- Pennies and Nickels are Expensive to Make; Canada Will Phase out Pennies Social studies, math, language arts. Classroom lessons and activities for grades 2 to 4, 3 to 5, and 6-7.
- High School Students Show off Engineering Talent Technology and science. Classroom lessons and activities for grades four to eight about robots, robotics, and building robots.
- McKinley Museum Hopes to Restore First Lady’s Dresses U.S. History. Two classroom lessons for grades four to six. More about Ida McKinley in a lesson called Needles, Hooks, and Bobbins; students will gain an understanding of the evolution of Presidential campaigns in the United States in The Front Porch Campaign (both from the National First Ladies Library).
- The Supreme Court Listens to Arguments Regarding the Affordable Health Care Act Social studies, government, history, language arts, civics. Classroom lessons and activities for grades four to eight. Understanding the Affordable Health Care Act, "Inside the Supreme Court with Chief Justice John Roberts," the role of the Supreme Court, landmark cases, and more.
