Moscow “Hippodrome” Hosts Annual Troika Races

Residents of Moscow braved below zero temperatures this past weekend to watch the annual troika races. It's one of the most elegant spectacles in the capital's winter calendar, with a tradition that goes back to 1840. A troika is an elaborate sled pulled by three horses. It first appeared in the seventeenth century and was mainly used for carrying mail or passengers over long distances – or for special occasions like weddings. Nowadays, troika racing teams come from many central Russian cities, as well as from France and Finland.
