Carbon Capture Experiment Underway at West Virginia Power Plant

Posted Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Featured on Episode 13 of the 2009-2010 season

Many scientists believe that the earth is warming because of too much greenhouse gas trapped in the atmosphere. One of those greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide, produced when fossil fuels like oil and coal are burned to produce energy. In our neighboring state of West Virginia, a multi-million dollar experiment is underway. It's called carbon capture, and the plan involves capturing carbon dioxide, produced in emissions at the Mountaineer Power Plant, and burying it deep inside the earth. Some hope it will change the way the world manages carbon emissions; others have reservations about the safety. Elaine Quijano has our story in New Haven, West Virginia, an expensive partnership between plant owner American Electric Power and French company, Alstom.
