Challenger in Afghanistan’s Run-Off Election Pulls out of Race

The challenger in Afghanistan's run off election has pulled out of the race. Incumbent President Hamid Karzai claimed victory after the first election, but a United Nations-backed group of monitors threw out nearly a third of his votes citing fraud. A second election pitting President Karzai against challenger Abdullah Abdullah was scheduled for November seventh. On Sunday, Mr. Abdullah pulled out of the election, saying he did not believe the second round of balloting would be any fairer than the first. The Obama administration is currently debating a new Afghanistan strategy which could involve sending more U.S. troops.
