When the Ares 1-X rocket left the launch pad, it took the hard work of more than two hundred engineers and technicians at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Their piece is the upper stage of the rocket. Since this is a first test, this upper stage mock-up does not include fuel tanks and engine. But it is designed to be the same size and weight as a real upper stage, and will help to provide important data.
