Cincinnati Zoo’s Manatees Will Relocate to the Wild in Florida

Posted Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Featured on Episode 5 of the 2009-2010 season

The Cincinnati Zoo's two Florida manatee residents - Slip and Lil' Joe - are going back home soon. As part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's rescue, rehabilitation and release program, Slip and Lil' Joe will travel to Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo where they will start training for life in the wild.
Slip, who is seventeen, was born at sea world and has lived at the zoo since 2005. He will be released at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Florida. Lil’ Joe was rescued as an orphan in nineteen eighty nine, and also came to the zoo in 2005. The zoo will upgrade its manatee tank while they await the arrival of new manatees next spring.
