A powerful earthquake with a magnitude estimated at about 8.0 rocked the southern Pacific Ocean at dawn Wednesday morning. The quake caused several tsunamis that sent water racing over the nearby islands of Samoa and American Samoa. A tsunami is a huge wave of water that can be caused by an earthquake. On Tuesday, Typhoon Ketsana slammed into the coast of Vietnam, sending about 200,000 people to higher ground. Ketsana passed over the Philippine Islands over the weekend, with the city of Manila bearing the brunt. Nearly two million people were affected by the storm. A typhoon is a violent tropical storm like a hurricane, which occurs in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans.
